About us

The Floating Homes project is the brainchild of Kerry Martin and Nicolas Lee. Kerry and Nic founded Waterside Sustainable Developments with the vision of delivering exceptional flood and climate-proof sustainable homes with all the benefits of waterfront living. Kerry has over 12 years’ experience pioneering floating structures in Europe, while Nic has a background in mathematics and real estate development, and is a sustainability enthusiast.  The team will provide the design skills and international expertise required for the project.

Kerry and Nic first met at the Panuku (Auckland Council Development Team) “Water Edge” symposium for waterfront development leaders (www.advancewateredge.com) where Gregor, along with other world-renowned architects and city planners, presented ideas on how Onehunga, a semi-industrial waterfront community in Auckland, could reactivate its waterfront.

TOES, “The Onehunga Enhancement Society”, in which Kerry was engaged in a leading role, was so impressed with Gregor’s work that TOES and the Onehunga Business Association commissioned him to develop an alternative design for the East West Link and Onehunga’s waterfront.

Since then, Kerry, a former professional wakeboarder, and Gregor, an avid surfer living at a west coast beach in Auckland, have continued to collaborate on water-related visionary architecture projects. Together they presented a proposal for a floating America’s Cup Village and this body of work reawakened Kerry’s hunger to deliver beautiful and unique floating homes.

In Hopper developments; renowned for their outstanding waterfront living project in Whitianga, Pauanui and Marsden Cove; they found an ideal partner to deliver New Zealand’s first floating home community, as part of the new marine district at the Whitianga Waterways. This unique location will allow each house to have its own 18 metre berth, offering a unique opportunity to step straight from your house onto your boat..
